To UllR

UllR of the northern lands, UllR of the cold
and the stinging wind, bow-god, hunting-god,
deer-stalker, sharp-eyed tracker of bird and beast.
We welcome you, we welcome your strength, we welcome
your season. UllR, glory of the gods, bearer
of the oathring, master of bright-halled Ydalir
that stands among the green-boughed yew, rune-master,
son of Sif, elf-friend, wise and prudent chief. Grant us skill
and silence as we step on crusted snow, grant to us
a season safe from harm. Hail to lordly UllR!

To UllR

Hail to UllR, hail the god of the hunt!
Hail UllR, whose aim is ever true,
whose arm is strong, whose eye is keen,
whose step is sure in deep-drifted snow
or on treacherous ice, who roams the woods,
who knows each tree, each nest, each hiding place,
who knows the ways of every beast. UllR,
son of bright-haired Sif, bowman unsurpassed,
unyielding one who travels, free and fleet,
through winter’s rage. Hail UllR! Hail the bow-god!

To UllR

Hail to UllR, son of golden-haired Sif,
fair-faced bow-god whose aim is ever true,
skilled hunter of beasts, provider of meat
to feed one’s kin throughout the frozen months.
Snowshoe-god, agile one whose swift step
across sheer drifts is unmatched by any.
Share with us your keen eye and steady arm,
grant us a sure shot and a safe return,
as we join you in the winter’s hunts.
Hail to UllR! Hail to the huntsman!

To UllR

Hail to UllR, master of Ydalir,
quick-thinking son of golden-haired Sif,
god of the winter, god of the north.
With skis strapped tight, with bow at the ready,
you travel, swiftly and certainly,
through thick-grown woods, branches bare
of leaves, coated with glittering ice.
In clouds of breath hanging still in the air;
in cold so piercing it stings our lungs
and numbs gloved fingers; in children’s
sleds on well-packed hills; in grey mornings
spent crouched, bow in hand, waiting for deer,
UllR, we know you, we feel your might.
Hail to UllR! Hail the bow-god!

To UllR

Hail to UllR, son of Sif, glory of the gods!
Best of hunters, best of trackers, best of bow-men,
we ask your favor in this bitter season,
we ask your guidance as we seek our quarry,
we ask your wisdom as we make our way.
Grant us cunning, grant us vigor, grant us strength.
May our judgment be fine, our will firm, our wit quick.
We see you in the brilliant, shifting northern sky,
in shadows cast by thin-limbed trees, in days more dark
than light. We know you in fingers numbed, in hunger eased,
in hair made crisp with ice. UllR, god of the north,
god of the long winter, we welcome you. Hail UllR!

To UllR

UllR, glory of the gods, swift and surefooted
son of Sif of the golden hair, we welcome you.
On broad fields and in tangled woods we see your might,
snowshoe-god, hunter, bowman whose aim never fails.
Grant us good fortune, UllR, god of the far north,
as we tread on crusted snow, gun or bow at hand,
watching for quarry with which to fill our larder
and feed our families well. Hail to UllR!

To UllR

Hail to UllR, glory of the Aesir.
So fair you are to look upon, UllR,
so peerless a bowman, so swift your skis.
Shield-sailing sorcerer, tamer of horses,
a warrior’s gift may you bestow on those
you favor most, courage and strength and skill.
Yours is the yew-tree, yours the northern lands;
honored you are by your folk in the north,
welcomed with winter by hunter and tracker.
UllR, we call you to aid in our hunting.
Your people of snow and ice hail you now.
Hail UllR!
